Due to her busy schedule and new writing class, Larisa has left the group.

1/03

The group made the following decisions at the annual year-end review meeting in January:

  • continue taking turns selecting books (whoever chooses should bring a couple of titles for the group to choose from)
  • read a biography in May
  • more in-depth discussion: the discussion leader will continue to provide biographical info and pose a few questions to the group (ideally in advance via email). Other members are encouraged to pose questions in advance. Members are encouraged to submit relevant background info (websites, etc.) to Lena for posting on the website.
  • read a book about poetry
  • recruit new members
  • read a book from Southern Europe (italy, spain); Stacey suggested Primo Levi's "The Periodic Table"
  • read Seabiscuit in May or June and go to the races

At the February meeting, Larisa proposed some ideas for themes:

  • beat poets and writers
  • futurists (russian and italian)
  • existentialists

The group decided to try a theme and chose "the beats" for 2 months. We will begin in April with Beat Poetry and in May we will read a book by a beat author (to be decided in April -- everyone should suggest one book). (2/21/02)

Permanent Guest status has been eliminated.

1/22/02

At the January meeting, members proposed some new ideas, a new deadline for dinner theme announcement and criteria for book selection to add to the existing guidelines:

  • series of 3 books in one theme (actually suggested last year too!)
  • members will take turns choosing a book (instead of a consensus method)
  • enhance our book discussion with more advanced preparation (bring book reviews, bring other reference materials, keep to a strict timeline, all members contribute)
  • dinner theme will be announced 2 weeks in advance; dishes should be announced at least 1 week in advance (send email to host and webmaster)
  • have a field trip or group activity (significant others might join us)
  • alternative venues for dinner upon occasion (might work well with a poetry interlude)
  • new members can be added

10/01/01

Lisa has decided to become a permanent guest rather than a regular member due to her evening work schedule as of October 2001. Please remove her from your email list -- she does not have access to email any longer.

1/29/01

At the January meeting, members proposed a few themes and criteria for book selection to add to the existing guidelines:

  • short story interlude (similar to a poetry interlude)
  • reading a long book over 2 months (the first month would be a poetry interlude then the second month would be a discussion of the book)
  • series of 3 books in one theme
  • challenge ourselves; read a philosophical book or read a book and then read a critique of it
  • books by nobel prize winners or other award-winning authors.
