Keeping with the time period of our 1959 movie, let's have a 1950s-inspired slumber party (hair curlers optional). Need inspiration for your dish? The 1950’s are identified with casseroles, backyard BBQs, Blue Plate specials, and the miraculous transformation of the mundane into the fantastic -- Rice Krispy treats and Campbell’s green bean casserole. Jell-O salad was elevated to an art form in its various layered, molded, embellished, and fluorescent-colored incarnations. Pudding with vanilla wafers, and all things banana were favorite desserts (bananas foster, banana splits, banana cream pie - with vanilla wafers, of course.) Americanized versions of ethnic foods such as Tamale Pie, and Rice-A-Roni were widely marketed. The aluminum clad TV dinner was king. It was the birth of fast food -- McDonald’s and Kentucky-Fried Chicken (not yet supersized:) Iceberg lettuce wedges, Pigs-in-a- blanket, beanie-weenies, tuna noodle casserole, fried chicken, meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, and Tang were still respectable.
